Parental Support Vital For Trans Youth – PubMed
Here’s one for the “no brainer” file: a study of transgender youth has found that when kids have supportive parents, they experience “higher life satisfaction, lower perceived burden of being transgender, and fewer depressive symptoms.” Or put more plainly: when parents support a transgender youth, they are happier and more mentally stable.
The final conclusion of the abstract is that “Interventions that promote parental support may significantly affect the mental health of transgender youth.” This is a vitally important part of the equation: making sure the kid (or any transgender person) has a loving support network. How many stories of woe and depression in the trans community begin with “I feel so alone!”? Too many, and so many of those lead to suicide. Anything that trans organizations and programs can do to enhance that support network could mean one less life taken by depression and hopelessness.
