Transgender Healthcare in Missouri
The Springfield, MO News-Ledger has a nice article today on the struggles trans people face when it comes to healthcare.
Uncomfortable doctor-patient relationships are not the only barrier to transgendered patients receiving care. According to the Missouri Foundation for Health, transgendered patients have less access to health insurance, are less likely to find competent care, and are less likely to seek care out of fear of how they’ll be treated.
Some of the stories told in the article echo closely the kinds of things described in the recent journal article about the stigma transgender patients face when it comes to healthcare. it’s disappointing to hear such stories, though it’s good that media stories like this one are starting to be written. Awareness is the first step to change.
