The Average American Penis is about 5 1/2″ Long — PubMed
Do you think there’s any subject in biology that someone won’t run a controlled study on? Think again. I was looking into the subject of HRT and its effects; I happened to stumble across this journal article. I couldn’t resist sharing it.
Hernbeck, Reece, Schrick, & Sanders, “Erect Penile Length and Circumference Dimensions of 1,661 Sexually Active Men in the United States,” J Sex Med July 2013.
My favorite part about this is how it’s so clinically unapologetic. There’s no grand hypothesis to test here; the researchers simply wanted to test the accuracy of self-reported penile length in a group of men. For science!
Here were their findings:
For this sample of 1,661 men, the mean erect penile length was 14.15 cm [5.5 in] (SD = 2.66; range = 4 to 26 cm), and the mean erect penile circumference was 12.23 cm [4.8 in] (SD = 2.23; range = 3 to 19). Participant characteristics were not associated with measured length or circumference. Most men measured their penis while alone, using hand stimulation to become erect.
I’m just going to let that last line speak for itself.
I promise, I was undergoing some actual research in PubMed when I found this article. But then the 10 year old in me started giggling and I had to share.
